Discussion

Please read this before posting your comments or asking any questions. Thanks!

If you hadn’t already guessed from the major lack of updates, the development of Glitch is on hold indefinitely (and has been for quite some time). I do plan to eventually continue development at some point – I have not abandoned it! – but, without going into too much personal detail, the last few years have been very stressful for me, and Glitch simply isn’t a priority in my life right now.

To everyone asking me to open source it: I genuinely appreciate your offers to help and your interest, but I’m sorry, it’s just not going to happen. Please believe me when I tell you – the source code isn’t even close to being portable. For anyone that’s curious: it’s coded in Object Pascal using Delphi, it relies on a bunch of Win32 stuff, and overall it’s a poorly structured, unoptimised mess!

To everyone asking about a Mac version: I hear you guys loud and clear, and I would love to make a Mac version, but I have no immediate plans to do so. I don’t own a Mac, I’ve never programmed for a Mac, and I do not have any plans (or money!) to buy one. There is so much stuff I need to improve and fix in the Windows version of Glitch first, before I can even start thinking about creating something for another operating system and plug-in format. I’m sorry to say that Mac simply isn’t a priority for me at the moment.

The only thing I can suggest is that you check out some other popular plug-ins which are available for Mac:

Please note: I am not associated with these products/companies in any way; I am simply providing the links here for your convenience.

Anyway… as I gradually figure things out in my personal life and get back into coding on a regular basis, I will do my best to squash the last remaining bugs in the plug-in and update it to VST 2.4 (sorry, I have no real interest in VST 3.0 at the moment). I will also focus on creating some small, single purpose effects – stuff that I can create more easily and in a more casual fashion, rather than some huge beast like Glitch that eats up all my free time (and sanity). I received quite a lot of requests to release single versions of the effects from Glitch, so that’s probably one of the first things I’ll do.

Feel free to continue leaving your comments here as usual, but please do not expect to see any updates anytime soon.

Cheers,
Kieran.

I am going to tell a funny story and I hope all of the fans of "GLITCH" read this post. I am not using this site to advertise nor am I degrading the dblue endeavor however I will acknowledge the fact that a little over four (4) years ago I stumbled upon the "GLITCH" plugin webpage in regards to the search of a unique effect I could use on the production of an artist I was engineering. Low and behold… the glitch artifact. Later on I realized the developer (Mr. Foster) had made it available as a free plugin, but I had also noticed the plugin was coded in a slightly complex language… so I studied… and STUDIED. To make the LONGEST story as short as possible … The illustrious Digidesign and the fantastic time stretch goliath zPlane has licensed (yours truly) as the developer of a brand new and very powerful algorithm. I really owe it all to dblue… I would have never paused on audio engineering to focus on C++/DELPHI/MAX …etc. Licencing is complete and we just need to clear the promotional "yellow tape." Sooooooooo… all of you cheeky little software pirates out there …prepare yourself, because it is NOT free and it comes with some shiny-cool hardware… (so you can GLITCH your f**kin' brains out…) I figured this site and some other few glitch-loyalist forums deserve to here the BRANDnews from the source first.

    oh, psssssssssst. and.

    windows and mac version.

We have to thank Mr. Foster… (THANK YOU) !!!

    peace!

  5. Wilfred Mellers says:

They should make a version for a mac. I don't use PC's. That's when the program will be saying something. Now it is of no use to me. I am not gonna use a PC just for that.

    • Kieran says:

@Wilfred Mellers: "They" is just me – just one person with a busy schedule, bills to pay, and all the typical problems that life likes to throw at me. If you would please simply read the statements that I have already posted here, you would hopefully understand my situation a little bit better. I appreciate your interest, but as you can see, there have already been lots of other comments on this subject, and I've tried to explain as clearly as I can why it has not happened yet.

  6. Psyfrog says:

    Hi there !
Glitch is a really nice thing, cheers to the author ;)

But: Im one of those bastards whore are screaming after an Audio Unit Version of Glitch :)

Did anyone resolv converting the VST to an Audio Unit ?
I tried it with FXpansions VST to AU Adapter (http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=5&tab=22) but it doesnt work. Either the Converter doesnt like the 2.4 VST Standard, or the Plugin has another Standard.

  7. Psyfrog says:

Hi Kieran, thx for your fast response.
Another method would be to use reason (rewire) to connect it to Logic, but the Problem here will be the same i think (Windows VST / Mac VST).

    Damn :D
I really try to find a workaround (Sugar Bytes Effectrix is the best here i think) but Glitch is exactly what i looked for.
Maybe, one day, we can see an Audio Unit Version of it and you get rich ;)

When i find a way to convert Glitch for Logic, you'll surely get a donation from me :)

    Keep on the good work.

  8. Rasta Omega says:

Can someone please help me? I am using FL Studio 8 XXL and when I try to load Glitch, it says "Can't load effect in channel" What am I supposed to do? What does this mean?

  9. frickler says:

A mac version (AU) would be killer!!!!

    hope youll think about it!

  10. Fox says:

Any news if there will be updates for Cubase 4 and Cubase 5 to get this thing working again? I recently switched hosts and can't use this thing anymore, which is a pity – it was essential in many old tracks of mine.

  11. Starpilot says:

My friend has this effect and i really like it. I wish there was a version in AU format for GarageBand that i could use.

  12. Malachi says:

This plugin is bad ass. I use it constantly. It crashes the shit out of my stuff, but I live with it because I can't live without it. Gonna bounce/freeze those tracks for live performance. How much would everyone pay for an upgraded stable version of this software? I'd drop $50 without blinking. Big thanks to Kieran!

  13. chris delany says:

    peace out minimalastiks.

  20. djzoid says:

nice vst with tonnes of potential uses! i use lmms for linux and glitch works great! it would be nice if you could streamline the software a bit but thats not a problem. ive found heavier software tends to create more problems when runnning through WINE so it does occasionally crash, thats why i save my work before fiddling about with it.

also, its great for making wobbly dubstep bass!

mac sucks big fat floppy donkey **** btw.

  21. mchakkra says:

hey kieren, i've noticed that Glitch's control parameters don't show up in abletons Live 8 config mode for automation within Live. Is there a workaround for this, or will you eventually get it working in Live version 8?

your plugin is one of my all time favorites, and don't want to be without it in live situations.

your work is dope. great job man.

  22. Whilst I too would love, adore and cherish a Mac version, I'm disappointed that some fellow musicians who use PCs feel the need to be so abusive, dismissive, and antagonistic about another type of computer and those who use it. Let's all just make music!

  23. My dubstep synths are rockin a little harder now thanks to Glitch! =X

Why in the world one of the big boys havent stroked a nice check to put their stamp on it is beyond me.

Kieren I bet a few zeros would help you find the time to fix the coding "mess"

i use PC + ProTools cause im married to the PTools trap, rtas would be nice, but i wont hold my breath, i'll keep boucing my Glitched parts with Cubase, and then back in,,vst wrapper is crap,,uh what a pain.oh well
    Glitch is worth it, haha.

but the truth is Mac + Logic is where its really at for electronic music, its not even up for debate.

  24. Kablam says:

Hey all fellow macusers checkout this alpha version of wacvst (windows vst to mac vst adapter) there is even a picture of it running glitch on the website. i heard people got this working and then used fxpansion vst – au wrapper to wrap it for au hosts.
Havent tried it myself but im about to. might be worth checking out.

FL Studio recognised it, but it won't load as an effect or anything… Can SOMEONE please help me with this one?

  26. Benny says:

I simply adore this plug-in! It might not be perfect (what is?), but that doesn't stop it from blowing your mind! Clever use of it will render amazing results, using it a lot on a track I'm currently working on and it all sounds great so far, I cannot believe you're generous enough to give it away for free, you could easily make a buck of it! I can't thank you enough for Glitch! :)

  27. august.eighty says:

Love this plugin! I've had to stop using it since upgrading from Nuendo 3 to 4.2 (crashes projects all to hell) but I anxiously await a new version – even if it's 5 years from now! Seriously, I would easily drop $100+ on this plugin if a new less buggy version were released. I'm sure you'll make a fortune off this in the future. ;-)

  28. David says:

@ Rasta Omega: You can load FX in the Mixer of FL only. The channels are reserved for instruments! (First you have to put the dll of dBlue/VST into a folder and tell FL in the File options to look into that folder to find it. Hit F1 (Help Manuel) to learn the details)

@ Wreck: Where did FL find it?

  29. Bob Gavin says:

    Hey Kieren,

    Glitch is da Shizzzle !!
There are a lot of MIDI controller out there.
Do you have any plans on implementing a MIDI Learn functionality ?!?

The perfect example if Spectrasonics Stylus RMX.

    1. Klick Midi-Learn
    2. Move (hardware) controller you want to assign
    3. Move parameter on the screen to be altered.
    4. Done.

    Thanx anyway !!
    Will donate in January.

    Cheers,
    Stanley aka. Bob Gavin

    • Kieran says:

@Stanley/Bob Gavin: MIDI learn is already implemented: you simply right-click on a control in Glitch, then a white outline will appear around the control to indicate that MIDI learn is ready, then move a MIDI controller to assign it. There are more details in the PDF manual which you can get from the download page.

first, let me say your vst is breathtaking. it's a huge part of my productions and i want to thank you for creating something so brilliant. that said, i'm curious to know if there is a known issue with your vst and ableton live 7.0.3? i have a lot of issues with ableton crashing when i have one or more instances of glitch used on a few tracks in a project. and if i save a project with glitch, sometimes my computer will freeze completely when trying to reopen the project. but if i am able to get into ableton, sometimes the vst simply won't operate, and if i click on the plug-in edit button to view the vst's gui, i either get a little square with the "x" to close the window instead of the gui, or ableton will close out completely.

i tend to use overdrive a lot, and record automation within glitch, and when i'm editing anything in real time i can guess that 90% of the time ableton will crash. and i also use audiomulch, but i haven't had as many problems with that daw.

please let me know if you'd like me to provide more information. any info would be great. and again, thank you for this amazing vst.

  31. David says:

Finally made it to donate 70 €… it's worth every cent!

This is one of the most useful plugins I've ever used. I remember seeing a video on youtube in which this was used and I was thinking to myself "damn I gotta find a torrent of this" and then I find out that you're giving it out for free! The only bugs Ive experienced while using it is when I try editing different glitch patterns banks.. Like if I have pattern 1 set on MIDI and everything and I try editing pattern 2, it'll crash. But that is easily forgiven considering how much you can do with just 1 pattern set. I've used this thing in every song I've made since downloading it. Its perfect for subtle effects.. Or completley altering your sound in ways you never even thought were possible. Thank you =]

  33. Florian says:

Hey, Sorry, maybe you find some time to help me, I would be thankful, cause i've got a big problem with the newest version of the programme. everytime I want to open it on an audio the programme suddenly shuts down. The plugin worked for some time, but untill I tried to use the W-write-button (cubase sx1) to change the settings while playing the beat, it first didn't worked to read the written changes, and secound didn't work completly again sinse opening the programme next time.

by the way, sorry for bad english, i'm from germany.

i really love to use your plug in and I thought of making a donation. i'm not sure if I will do, but in fact i've never seen such a useful free-plugin in my life, but of a usual compressor. I tried to install the plug in new, but it went on like I said. the old version of the programme works, but I want to use the new one, because it looks better and has some more effects that I need, and I don't like, that you could not go under 16 at the old stretching tool.. I liked to set this on 4 or something… man it could make me sad, so please help me!

  34. Hey, I saw your Program being used on YouTube as well as Your Product demo and all I can say is that out of all the Free and Non-free VSTs, this is in the Top of Awesomeness……but I have a Question. I downloaded your Program and tried to Use it. I unziped the file then Put the .dll file in the VST portion of the Plugin folder (I am using FL Studio 9)

And when I tried to open it, it said "you tried to load an effect into a channel. Load the plugin in the mixer instead."

So I ran the Scan again, it found it and I tried to open it in the Mixer, but then it said this "Sorry but this plugin cannot be found or Opened. If this plugin has to be Registered, please make sure that you registered it correctly."

I was really lookin' forward to using this to take my Music to another Level but I'm stuck…..

Do you have any advice, I'd really Appreciate it

Glitch is an amazing VST. All this stuff would have either A: not really have been [easily] possible for me to do, or B: horribly time consuming [and notably, I'd have to be working at a really high LPB, and a REALLY high BPM, excluding stutter].

Now, I can do what I mean, and do it effortlessly. Although, I wish more parameters were [easily] controllable from my host [Renoise, which works flawlessly with Glitch]. On the other hand, there's always the Automation window, but…

I wish there was a Linux version, but Renoise runs under Wine in Linux just fine, so I'll just take that route instead.

  37. VYZR says:

This plug in and FL Studio is the only reason why i have'nt completely ditched my windows laptop, its too buggy with respect to using in ableton live , for say a live performance. But great for creating f**ked up break downs and then porting them to my OSX driven MBPro. Suprised you havent been approached by some of the big players to helping you develop it further into the awesome plug that it very nearly is. Sir i salute you.

Any plans to have Glitch working with 64-bit architecture?

  39. Make this compatible for MAC..!!!! Audiot UNits version is a MUST NEED

  40. spazmo says:

Quite possibly the best VST out there. It's by far my most favorite, and the first VST I go to when I wanna get some crazy sounds. Works flawlessly w/ Acid Pro 7 and Home Studio 7, I have no complaints, have used it live multiple times, and always works when I need it to.

Thanks for making such an awesome VST, and providing it for free.

    Hats off to you guy(s)!

  41. jonny says:

    thanks for the amazing plugin!
hope things work out for your personal life.

if the whiners could just give the guy a bit of respect and space to breathe.

i mean really, kieran has done this all for FREE and on his own time, so why give him a hard time for not having the time or desire to make it MAC compatible?

anyways, i appreciate your work and will buy a pc just to run this plug in!

  42. Andrey says:

Big THANKS for Glitch from Russia!

  43. TheAlphaNerd says:

So… I'm thinking about trying to port this plug-in to max4live with included Monome support.

Although this wouldn't be a perfect Mac Solution (as it would require ableton and max4live) the same base could potentially be built into a standalone max patch.

Is there a good place to look for the basic logic behind the glitch effects… and how I might go about programming them?

My work will be documented here

    hey, fantastic plugin.

I'm trying to develop a sequencer, using sound library FMODex (www.fmod.org).
Fmod is supposed to work with VST plugs

It seems that there is a problem when activating Glitch via Fmod.
I asked to Fmod developpers, and they said me that was an Glitch internal problem.
    Any idea?

    • Kieran says:

@mickeu645: It's definitely a Glitch problem. After a long, long time of having this project on hold, I've finally been able to work on it again lately, so I'm hoping to release an updated version with some important bugfixes quite soon.
